A prenatal or postpartum massage is similar to a typical massage with modifications to the body positioning, pressure used, and avoiding certain areas. This type of massage can help ease the aches and pains in your changing body.
Prenatal Massage
Your prenatal massage will be customized to meet your specific needs. Prior to roughly 20 weeks, you can lay face down on the table if it is comfortable for you. Once you reach that point, we can use special cushions that allow you to lay face down, or use a wedge and side-lying depending how you are most comfortable.
There are certain areas in the body that will be avoided as they are contraindicated during pregnancy. The pressure may be adjusted to account for looser ligaments and other pregnancy related changes.
A prenatal massage can help improve circulation and mobility, ease muscle soreness and tension, and help you to have a more pain free and enjoyable pregnancy.
Postpartum Massage
According to the American Pregnancy Association, postpartum massage can help with stress relief, hormone regulation, postpartum depression, decreased swelling, improved breastfeeding, and better sleep. Postpartum massage is a great way to help your body recover after giving birth and lower stress hormones so you can relax easier.
This type of massage will have fewer restrictions than a prenatal massage, but may still use special cushions or bolstering to accommodate for sore breasts. A towel may be placed on the table as well in case of breastmilk leaking.
Your newborn is welcome during your appointment if you prefer. Many newborns sleep a lot, so we can adjust the routine to the baby's needs. If you will be bringing your baby, please notify in advance so we can plan for extra time if needed.
